Stupid Michigan weather is really getting on my nerves. I swear this is the longest winter in history!

I am officially in "I hate winter" mode. To be honest, I've been in that mode since the middle of January. Too much snow and too many freezing-cold temps this year. Whine, whine, whine. That darn groundhog and his shadow! I'll pretend he didn't see it and hope for some warmer weather soon. Frankly, 35 degrees would make me happy right about now.

Sigh. Our town will probably never get a Trader Joe's. The closest one is two hours away.

I weaned myself off of mochas and other fancy drinks because they weren't being very kind to my stomach. Then Starbucks had to come up with a new tea drink to tempt me. I was skeptical. Berry chai infusion? It didn't sound very tasty. But. It is! Dang it. I'm trying to keep it to two a week. I figure my stomach will rebel against these at some point as well. (The berry one is obviously the one in the back, yes?)

This was a pretty good read. A divorced woman confronts her past as she tries to divert her son from a path she believes will be disastrous. The story flashbacks to her childhood and the trauma that shaped her family and her life. My only struggle was with the sense of dread she and her ex-husband conjure up about their son's relationship with a girl with cystic fibrosis. The author layers on the girl's emotional instability, but I kept wondering why everyone was so upset and so determined to help a nearly 20-year-old man escape from a fairly benign circumstance. The worst-case scenario wouldn't have had me hopping on a plane and rushing to Texas with tears in my eyes.

Like so many others, I really enjoyed The Lovely Bones. Alice Sebold has a writing style that brings out the details and reality of life. She does that really well in this book too. The story takes place over a single day. The protagonist, Helen, commits a tragic act in the first chapter, then has to figure out how to live with the consequences. There's a rich weaving of her current life with her childhood so you get a very strong sense of her character as well as those of the people she loves. The ending leaves mystery, but I felt allied with Helen's determination to face her fate with convinction in her actions and her self.
